Firefighters Pulled Milo From a Burning Home Unconscious. Days Later, He Came Back to Meet the Woman Who Saved Him

Milo was home alone when the fire started.

His family had stepped out to run errands, and his owner was out of the country.

Then smoke began filling the Pasadena house.

A delivery driver passing nearby noticed the danger, heard a dog barking and called 911.

That phone call may have saved Milo’s life.

Firefighters broke through the window

Ring camera footage captured Arcadia firefighters breaking a front-side window as crews rushed toward the burning home.

Among them was Sierra Madre firefighter Jessica Johnson.

It was her first active house-fire call.

Inside, visibility was extremely poor.

Heavy smoke filled the rooms.

And by the time more crews arrived, the barking had stopped.

That was the terrifying part.

Nobody knew if Milo was still alive.

She went back inside three times

Johnson searched the house using a thermal-imaging camera.

She did not find Milo immediately.

So she went back.

Then again.

On the third entry, she spotted something beneath a table in the living room.

It was Milo.

He was unconscious.

Johnson grabbed the 6-year-old Sheltie and carried him outside.

Milo wasn’t breathing normally

The dog had inhaled a dangerous amount of smoke.

Outside, firefighters placed an animal oxygen mask over his face and began working to revive him.

His family was rushing home.

His owner’s wife later recalled praying that Milo would somehow survive.

Then, after several long minutes, something changed.

Milo rolled over.

He was alive.

He recovered faster than anyone expected

The family said Milo went from appearing close to death to looking much more like himself within a short time.

A veterinarian later confirmed that he was expected to make a full recovery.

The house itself was badly damaged, and the family expects to be displaced for months.

But the member of the family they feared they had lost was still with them.

Then Milo went back to meet his rescuers

Days later, Milo returned to see the firefighters who had saved him.

The reunion was much calmer than the rescue.

No smoke.

No shattered window.

No oxygen mask.

Just Milo standing beside the people who had refused to stop searching for him.

The family even brought custom shirts featuring Milo’s smiling face for the crews.

For firefighter Jessica Johnson, the rescue had happened during her first active structure fire.

She entered the house three times.

On the final search, she found the dog everyone was hoping was still alive.

And because she kept looking, Milo got to come back and thank her himself.
