For 401 Days, Timothy Watched Other Dogs Go Home. Then a Family Finally Chose Him

For more than a year, Timothy waited.

People walked through the adoption center.

Dogs met families.

Leashes were clipped on.

Kennel doors opened.

And one by one, other dogs went home.

Timothy stayed.

The mixed-breed dog arrived at Wags & Walks Nashville in September 2025. What shelter workers expected might be a temporary stop became a wait of 401 days.

He was affectionate, playful and already comfortable around children and other dogs.

Still, adoption applications did not come.

He kept greeting people anyway

Earlier this year, Wags & Walks tried again to introduce Timothy to more potential adopters.

The organization described him as a roughly 45-pound dog who loved running, going for walks, playing with sticks and curling up beside people for long naps.

He was house-trained.

Crate-trained.

Good with other dogs.

Good with children.

The kind of dog that seemed, on paper, easy to imagine in a family.

But weeks continued to pass.

Shelter workers said Timothy was still learning to feel confident when left alone, but he was making progress with routine and reassurance.

What never seemed to disappear was his affection for people.

Wags & Walks described him as “sweet, goofy and loving.”

401 days is a long time for a dog

A year in a shelter is not experienced as a calendar.

It is experienced in ordinary moments.

The sound of someone entering.

Footsteps outside the kennel.

A leash appearing.

A visitor stopping at the next dog instead.

Another night without going home.

For Timothy, those moments added up to 401 days.

Despite receiving little adoption interest, the organization said he continued bringing joy to the people caring for him.

Then, in October, everything changed.

A couple finally saw him

A couple visited Wags & Walks Nashville.

This time, Timothy was not passed over.

They chose him.

After more than a year of waiting, the dog who had watched so many others leave finally had adoption paperwork with his own name on it.

Wags & Walks marked the moment with a celebration at its adoption center in Hermitage, Tennessee.

Photographs released by the rescue show Timothy beside his new family.

No kennel.

No adoption listing.

No waiting for the next visitor.

He was going home.

His story is why long-term shelter dogs still need to be seen

Timothy’s adoption is easy to reduce to one number.

401 days.

But that number also represents something shelters across the country struggle with every day.

Some dogs are not adopted quickly.

Not because they are bad dogs.

Not because something is necessarily wrong with them.

Sometimes the right person simply has not walked through the door yet.

Wags & Walks Nashville has helped thousands of dogs find homes since opening its Nashville chapter in 2019. The organization says many of its dogs live in foster homes while waiting to be matched with adopters.

Timothy needed longer than most.

But eventually, somebody stopped.

Somebody looked at the dog who had been waiting for more than a year and decided the waiting was over.

After 401 days, Timothy left the shelter with a family.

And this time, he did not come back.
