Dog Waited 7 Years in a Shelter. Then One Woman Spent Months Earning His Trust

For seven years, Kylo Jace watched other dogs leave the shelter with their new families.

He remained behind.

The shy, shaggy dog had become the longest-standing resident of the SPCA of Anne Arundel County in Maryland. Staff members loved him, volunteers walked him and cared for him, but Kylo needed something many potential adopters could not offer: time.

He did not immediately trust strangers. Anyone hoping to become part of his life had to return again and again, allowing him to feel safe at his own pace.

Then one woman decided that Kylo was worth the wait.

She Returned Twice a Week for Seven Months

Kylo’s future owner did not expect him to trust her after one meeting.

For approximately seven months, she visited the shelter twice every week. Each visit brought them a little closer. Slowly, Kylo allowed her into the small group of people he trusted.

The shelter explained that Kylo needed many meetings before he felt comfortable enough to reveal his playful and affectionate personality.

While other adopters might have chosen a dog who connected with them immediately, this woman continued coming back.

She learned his boundaries. Kylo learned that she would not disappear.

Before allowing him to leave permanently, shelter workers helped prepare the dog for such a major change. They practiced getting him into her car and arranged home visits so that his new surroundings would not feel completely unfamiliar.

Every step was taken carefully.

The Day Kylo Finally Left the Shelter

On July 11, 2026, Kylo walked out of the shelter for the final time.

Photographs shared by the SPCA show him beside his new owner, surrounded by the people who had cared for him during his long stay. Volunteers and staff members cried as they watched the dog leave the building he had known as home for seven years.

For them, it was a painful goodbye and the ending they had always wanted.

Kylo was no longer the dog waiting inside the shelter. He finally had a home of his own.

The shelter credited its staff and volunteers, who continued caring for Kylo even when finding the right adopter appeared difficult. Only a limited number of people had earned his trust over the years, so familiar volunteers took turns walking him and spending time with him.

His adoption fee was paid in memory of Jim Ehrig, a former shelter volunteer who died in 2020 and had shared a special connection with Kylo.

Some Dogs Need More Time

Shelter dogs do not all respond to people in the same way.

Some run toward visitors and quickly show affection. Others may appear distant, fearful or withdrawn, especially after experiencing abandonment, repeated changes or long periods in a kennel.

That does not mean they are incapable of forming a strong bond.

Kylo’s story shows what can happen when an adopter is willing to move at the animal’s pace. His new owner did not force an immediate connection. She built one through consistency.

After seven years of waiting and seven months of careful visits, Kylo finally understood that she had come to take him home.

For the first time in years, he left the shelter without having to return.
