She Lost the Use of Her Back Legs. Then Birdie Learned to Run Again on Wheels

When Nick Reilly and Alli Jaeger found Birdie on the streets of Baja, Mexico, she could not use her back legs.

The young stray had apparently been hit by a vehicle and left behind.

Her body told the story immediately.

She dragged herself forward using only her front legs.

But even in that condition, Birdie was alert, affectionate and still trying to move toward the people who had stopped for her.

Nick and Alli, who rescue dogs through their Expedition Ola project, took her in and hoped treatment might restore some movement.

The veterinary scans delivered devastating news.

Birdie’s spine was severed.

She was permanently paralyzed.

They refused to define her life by what she had lost

For many dogs, that diagnosis could have marked the end.

For Birdie, it became the beginning of a completely different life.

Her rescuers fitted her with a wheelchair.

At first, she had to learn how to balance.

How to turn.

How to move without relying on the legs that no longer worked.

Then something changed.

Birdie stopped simply moving.

She started running.

Videos showed her racing forward in her wheels with the same excitement as any other young dog.

Those clips quickly spread online.

Millions of people watched a dog who had been left unable to walk discover another way to move.

Then came another difficult decision

Birdie’s paralyzed hind legs created ongoing medical problems.

Because she could not feel or control them normally, they were vulnerable to injuries and complications.

Eventually, veterinarians and her rescuers decided that removing both hind legs would give Birdie a better quality of life.

She underwent a double amputation.

The recovery was not easy.

Complications meant Birdie spent longer in the hospital than expected.

But once she healed enough to return to her wheelchair, the same personality came back.

She moved.

Then she ran.

Again.

More than 8 million people watched her recovery

Birdie’s journey has now been viewed more than eight million times online.

People watched her go from a paralyzed stray lying helpless beside a road to a dog racing around on wheels.

But the most important part of her story has not happened yet.

Birdie still needs a permanent family.

Her rescuers say she is healing at home while they search for the right adopter.

A disabled dog can require extra planning.

There are wheelchairs.

Skin care.

Mobility routines.

Veterinary visits.

But Birdie has already shown what she brings in return.

Energy.

Trust.

And an almost ridiculous enthusiasm for moving forward.

She does not know she is supposed to feel sorry for herself

That may be why so many people connected with her.

Birdie does not understand the word “paralyzed.”

She does not know millions of strangers have watched her videos.

She does not know her body is different from most dogs.

She only knows that when the wheels go on, she can move.

So she moves.

Fast.

The dog left on the street unable to walk is still waiting for the final part of her rescue.

Not another surgery.

Not another viral video.
