He Survived Two Car Hits, Two Storms and Three Nights Alone. Then His Family Heard One Faint Bark

Bear’s family thought they were about to lose him twice.

The first time happened in the street.

The second happened three days later in a flooded swamp.

The Golden Retriever disappeared from his Plainfield, Illinois, neighborhood after a stranger approached him and tried to pet him. Bear panicked, bolted into the road and was reportedly struck by two vehicles before vanishing near the DuPage River.

His family ran after him.

Then they searched.

And kept searching.

Dozens of people looked for Bear

On the first night alone, around 30 people joined the search.

Still, there was no sign of him.

The family posted flyers.

They used a thermal drone.

They searched through the weekend as heavy rain pounded the area and the DuPage River rose dramatically.

The flooding made everything worse.

By then, Bear had already survived being hit by cars.

Now the place where he had disappeared was filling with water.

Three nights passed.

No dog.

No bark.

No clue.

Then someone heard something

On Sunday, the family went out again.

McKinley Sochacki’s father, Eric Underwood, heard a faint sound somewhere in the distance.

A bark.

It was barely enough to hear.

But in that flooded area, there was no reason for another dog to be there.

So they followed it.

Bear was trapped in rising water

Eric and Bear’s owner’s brother eventually found him.

His collar was caught on a branch.

He was standing neck-deep in floodwater.

Mud, debris and vegetation covered him.

And the water was still rising.

The family pulled him free.

McKinley later said she believed Bear may have had only about five more minutes before the situation became fatal.

He somehow made it through everything

Bear was rushed to a veterinarian.

Doctors checked him for broken bones and removed ticks and burrs from his coat.

Against the odds, the dog who had been hit by two cars, survived two thunderstorms and spent three nights outside had escaped with infections and skin irritation, but no devastating injuries.

He went home to recover with his family and his canine brother, Gus.

The bark that saved him

The most remarkable detail may be the simplest one.

Bear is not known for barking much.

But that day, when his family was close enough to hear him, he barked.

Just once was enough.

McKinley called it a miracle.

Her father called it family.

Because after three nights of searching, none of them had given up.

And when Bear finally made one sound from the flooded brush, they were still there to hear it.
