When Cognac disappeared from his Sacramento home, Ralph Johnson immediately began searching.
The dog was his first pet, and Ralph was deeply attached to him.
He walked through the neighborhood looking for any sign of Cognac.
The following day, he found what appeared to be the answer he had been dreading.
A dog that looked almost identical to Cognac was lying dead beside the road after apparently being struck by a vehicle.
Ralph was devastated.
He believed the search was over
The dead dog looked so much like Cognac that Ralph did not question what he was seeing.
He collected the animal and brought it to the Sacramento SPCA to be cremated.
For Ralph, there was nothing left to search for.
He believed he had found his dog and said goodbye.
“I was a wreck,” he later told reporters.
Then, several days later, his phone rang.
“He’s alive?”
The call came from Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento.
Staff told Ralph they had a dog named Cognac.
Ralph could barely understand what they were saying.
“He’s alive? What do you mean he’s alive?” he remembered asking.
The explanation was extraordinary.
The dog Ralph had found beside the road was not Cognac.
His real dog had been picked up alive and brought to Front Street Animal Shelter.
Staff scanned the dog for a microchip.
The information led directly back to Ralph.
Cognac knew exactly who had come for him
Ralph arrived at the shelter the following morning before it had officially opened.
Staff allowed him inside.
Then Cognac was brought into the room.
The dog did not hesitate.
According to Ralph, Cognac pulled the person holding him across the room and jumped directly into his arms.
Ralph hugged him while shelter employees watched.
Days earlier, he had believed he would never hold Cognac again.
Now the dog was climbing over him as if nothing had happened.
One microchip changed the ending
Cognac had received the microchip when Ralph adopted him.
Without it, shelter workers might never have known where he belonged.
Ralph later called the chip the reason they were reunited.
The story also left one sad mystery behind.
The dog Ralph found beside the road had looked enough like Cognac that he genuinely believed it was his own pet.
But Cognac was somewhere else, alive and waiting.
For several days, Ralph mourned a dog who had never actually left his life.
Then a shelter employee scanned one tiny chip and gave him the call he never expected to receive.
