The Shelter Thought Cora Was Just Scared. Then They Discovered She Had Puppies Somewhere

Cora wanted nothing to do with anyone.

When the small dog arrived at Marin Humane in Novato, California, she pressed herself against the back wall of her kennel and tried to disappear.

She had been surrendered with another dog and appeared frightened by almost everything around her.

But during her examination, shelter staff noticed something important.

Cora had recently given birth.

Her puppies were nowhere to be seen.

This is Cora, the momma who was reunited with her puppies after being surrendered.

The shelter realized her babies were still somewhere else

The discovery changed everything.

The puppies were young enough that they still needed their mother. Shelter workers began asking questions and eventually convinced the person who had surrendered Cora to bring the puppies in as well.

Four tiny puppies arrived at the shelter.

Staff placed them inside a carrier and brought it into the room where Cora was waiting.

A camera was already recording.

At first, Cora was too frightened to move

The beginning of the video is difficult to watch.

Cora remains pressed against the wall while a shelter employee sits nearby.

Her tail is tucked. Her body is tense.

Then a sound comes from the carrier.

One of the puppies cries.

Cora lifts her head.

Another puppy is taken from the carrier and placed on the floor.

For the first time, Cora moves forward.

Her entire posture begins to change.

Then her tail started wagging

The frightened shelter dog disappeared almost instantly.

Cora approached the puppy, sniffed it and began wagging her tail.

As the remaining puppies were brought out one by one, she became increasingly excited.

She moved between them and the carrier, repeatedly checking inside as if making sure no puppy had been forgotten.

Soon the puppies were climbing around their mother and beginning to nurse.

Shelter workers watching the reunion said there were “tears of joy” in the room. The video quickly spread online, reaching nearly three million Facebook views in its first days and tens of thousands of shares.

They gave the puppies names that matched their mother

Because their mother was named Cora, staff chose names inspired by the television series “Downton Abbey.”

The four puppies became:

  • Carson
  • Branson
  • Moseley
  • Edith

More importantly, all four were healthy and once again able to stay with their mother while they were still young enough to need her.

Cora changed once her puppies returned

Shelter staff later said Cora returned to being a friendly, happy dog after the reunion.

The nervous animal hiding at the back of the kennel had not simply been afraid of the shelter.

She had been separated from her babies.

Once they were placed beside her again, the difference could be seen almost immediately.

The story also received the ending the shelter wanted.

Marin Humane later confirmed that Cora and all four puppies were adopted.

Years later, the video still works

The reunion happened in March 2016, but the footage continues to circulate because almost no explanation is needed.

At the beginning, Cora is frozen in the corner.

Then she hears the puppies.

Within seconds, her ears lift, her tail moves and she rushes toward them.

The camera captured the exact moment a frightened shelter dog realized her babies had come back.

And that is why people are still watching it years later.
